Poem To Dad

The Real Dad

Daddy, they told me that you were so very tough
Then, I came along, and things got a little rough
But, you were suppose to be strong
Was I too heavy, or was I just all wrong?
I don’t understand, and I just can’t see
Why a big man like you couldn’t carry little me.
I know by now, and I do understand
All that’s counted toward being a man
And you didn’t ask for me to come along
But me, I think that’s all dance and song
Just to make you feel better, a reason not to care
Does that sound a little harsh, or maybe unfair?
Well, what justice was done walking out of my life?
All alone to handle my own daily strife.
Every creature on earth knows how to multiply
Without rhyme or reason, nor even knows why
So, I can’t understand what a real man that makes
Please tell me the difference from belly crawling snakes.
To care only for yourself deserves no badge, no banners
True grit, real pride, bravery, and courage – all the stuff that matters
That’s what makes the difference between man and minor lad
The real man is the one who has the stuff to be a real dad.
