Physiological Motives II - Thirst

Like eating, drinking is a behaviour strongly but not exclusively influenced by a physiological drive, in this case the thirst drive.

Early attempts to localize thirst as triggered by dryness in the mouth and throat were abandoned in favour of a physiological explanation. Thirst is regulated by two bodily fluid balances: the fluid within the body's cells, and the fluid between the body's cells.

In the first case, high intracellular(within-cell) sodium levels dehydrate cells, causing stimulation of receptor cells in the hypothalamus. This 'drink' centre activates the thirst drive and we engage in drinking behaviour. At present, it is unclear whether and where there is a 'stop drinking' counterpart in the body to signal that fluid levels have been restored.

A second thirst regulator, sensitive to the functioning of the kidneys, appears to monitor extracellular(between cell) fluid levels. This regulator interacts with the first one to produce the internal signal of thirst.

Like eating, drinking behaviour is strongly influ
enced by learned, individual, and cultural factors. Social factors - including peer pressure and advertising - can affect drinking behaviour, especially for fluids other than water (the only fluid that 'quenches' thirst). Environmental cues also affect what we drink and when, as iced tea may sound refreshing in the summer, while hot chocolate is the beverage of choice for winter weather.

Thoughts To Live By

You shall not worry, for worry is the most unproductive of all human activities.
You shall not be fearful, for most of the things we fear never come to pass.
You shall not carry grudges, for they are the heaviest of all life's burdens.
You shall face each problem as it comes. You can only handle one at a time anyway.
You shall not take problems to bed with you, for they make very poor bedfellows.
You shall not borrow other people's problems. They can better care for them than you.
You shall not try to relive yesterday for good or ill, it is forever gone. Concentrate on what is happening in your life and be happy now!
You shall be a good listener, for only when you listen do you hear ideas different from your own.
You shall not become "bogged down" by frustration, for 90% of it is rooted in self-pity and will only interfere with positive action.
You shall count your blessings, never overlooking the small ones, for a lot of small blessings add up to a big one.
