How To Receive Holy Communion?

"Take ye, and eat. This is my body." Matthew 26:26

Receiving the Eucharist is a very important part of Mass. How we receive, should reflect how we feel about Christ. Here are some steps to help know how to receive the Eucharist.

Here's How:

1. Be Respectful - When going to Mass, show respect. Dress appropriate and be respectful to others. Make sure you confessed any mortal sin before having Holy Communion. You must be a practicing Catholic free of mortal sin in order to take Holy Communion.
2. Approach the Altar with Prayer - Act prayerfully. Keep your hands folded. Bow before taking Holy Communion. After the person says, "This is the Body of Christ" say "Amen."
3. Taking Communion Correctly - Taking the Eucharist by hand or mouth are both correct. If you take Communion by your mouth, open wide and slightly stick out your tongue.
4. If you take Communion by hand, form a throne by letting your dominant hand cradle your other hand.
5. Step to the Side - Don't place the Eucharist in your mouth if people are waiting behind you. Step to the side and then take the Eucharist.
6. Don't Walk Off with the Host - Immediately consume the Host before leaving the Altar.
7. Respect the Host - Have respect for the Host. Go back to your pew and pray.
8. Use Clear Body Language - Be clear how you plan to take the Eucharist.
9. State of Grace - One must be in a state of grace before taking the Eucharist. We must not have any mortal sin. If you think you committed a mortal sin, please go to confession before taking the Eucharist.
10. Politicians and others who are openly supportive of abortion should not take Holy Communion. Supporting abortion is a mortal sin. People who divorce and remarry without an annulment should not take Communion because in the eyes of the Church they are committing adultery.

Tips:

  1. Wash your hands before Mass.
  2. Be on time to Mass.
  3. Be as quiet as possible during Mass except when it's expected for you to talk.
  4. Keep an eye on your children.
  5. Remember in order to receive the Eucharist at a Roman Catholic church, you need to be a practicing Catholic. Anyone who isn't Catholic, should not take Eucharist.
